01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At Kurosushi, a meal can begin with sashimi or a small plate before moving on to the nigiri that catches your eye. Some diners have singled out the sashimi, including one review that mentioned an assorted abalone sashimi platter and scallops. The menu also lists a seven-variety sashimi selection chosen by the manager, as well as chopped octopus and sashimi of tuna, flounder and sweet shrimp. If you are unsure what to order, the assortment makes a good starting point before you settle on a favourite fish for nigiri.

Nigiri is available by the piece or as an eight-piece regular or premium assortment. Choose the regular selection to sample a range of sushi, or the premium one for options including toro, sea urchin and salmon roe. The regular assortment includes tuna, blue-backed fish, squid, egg, octopus, shrimp, eel and salmon; the premium selection features toro, white fish, herring roe, eel, large shrimp, scallop, sea urchin and salmon roe. These different line-ups can help guide your choice. One diner particularly enjoyed the scallop nigiri with salt and lemon, a change from soy sauce. The menu also lists angel shrimp and white fish cured with kelp, leaving room to add an individual piece to an assortment.

There is more to dinner here than sushi, with small plates and recommended dishes adding variety to the meal. Menu options include sekogani snow crab, abalone and daikon simmered in a savoury broth, fried pufferfish milt, and taro and chrysanthemum greens with yuzu miso. One visitor said they order the fried taro on every visit, enjoying its hot, fluffy texture—a dish that makes a welcome pause between pieces of nigiri. For an evening of sampling several dishes, there is also a course for 4,500 yen that includes a starter, salad, sashimi, fried food, sushi and chawanmushi, a savoury steamed egg custard.

Drinks include draft and bottled beer and sake. Hakushika (Jō) is recommended warmed or at room temperature. Whether you want to focus on nigiri or take your time over sashimi and small plates, there is room to shape the meal to suit the evening. Private rooms are available. Dinner reservations can be made, and payment is cash only.
